I just watched the shocking hidden-camera footage obtained by PETA's undercover investigators while they worked at a factory farm in Iowa that supplies Hormel and other meat companies. The cruelty documented by our investigator is beyond comprehension. Please watch the video and do all that you can to make sure that anyone who still eats ham, Spam, sausage, or bacon sees it.

In three months at the pig factory farm, our investigators documented that workers used metal gate rods and hard canes to beat sows. Pigs were poked in the eyes with clothespins and fingers for no reason at all, and workers and supervisors beat pregnant pigs. One supervisor even told our investigator, "You gotta beat on the bitch. Make her cry."

Baby piglets who were deemed too small to be profitable were slammed head first onto the concrete floor in an attempt to kill them, although some lingered alive for more than 12 minutes after the impact. More than 100 heavily pregnant pigs were denied water for five days, and injured and downed pigs were left for days and even weeks without veterinary care or an end to their suffering.

But the findings at this Iowa pig farm were not limited to cruelty to animals. PETA also documented an apparent violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Employees applied a spray containing "gentian violet"—a human carcinogen—to animals allegedly killed for human consumption, thereby making their flesh "adulterated," according to federal law.

The pigs at this facility need you to write to Hormel and demand they that follow PETA's eight-point policy to govern future pig farming operations. The plan includes calling for the immediate termination and criminal prosecution of anyone who is caught abusing or neglecting animals. It also includes improvements to the company's animal welfare guidelines.

Please watch the footage, write to Hormel, and vow to never again eat another hot dog, piece of ham, sausage link, or slice of bacon, because eating these "foods" supports the suffering that we documented on this farm.

Ask Australian Prime Minister to End Lamb MutilationsProminent Australian wool producers are pushing for the continued mutilation of millions of lambs each year—without any painkillers—despite previous promises to end the mulesing practice by 2010. Mulesing is a gruesome procedure in which farmers use gardening shears to cut huge chunks of skin and flesh from the backsides of lambs—without any painkillers—as a cruel and cheap method of preventing flystrike.

Australian wool industry appears to be a smokescreen to allow farmers to continue mutilating millions of lambs each year while pulling the wool over consumers' eyes. Clearly, the only way to ensure that Australian lambs are not painfully mutilated is for the Australian government to enact a permanent ban on this cruel and unnecessary practice.

The wool industry can and should end mulesing mutilations of lambs today, since effective and humane alternatives are already available. PETA is asking the wool industry to immediately use the better husbandry practices that are already employed by many Australian farmers to effectively and humanely prevent flystrike today, even as the entire industry also phases in a complete switch to flystrike-resistant breeds of sheep—something that should have been done decades ago.

Please urge the Australian prime minister to outlaw mulesing now and save millions of Australian sheep every year from needless suffering.

Overwinning:H&M gebruikt geen wreed geproduceerde Australische wol meer!

Maar jouw hulp is nog steeds nodig.

PETA Amerika heeft rond de tafel gezeten met H&M, de kledinggigant die in bijna iedere winkelstraat in Nederland te vinden is (1.500 winkels wereldwijd!). Na meerdere gesprekken met H&M over hoe lammetjes in de Australische wolindustrie worden verminkt tijdens de 'mulesing'-methode, heeft het bedrijf de ethische beslissing genomen om alleen nog wol in te kopen van leveranciers die geen mulesing toepassen. Goed gedaan, H&M!
Wat is 'mulesing'? Australische boeren fokken schapen op zo'n manier dat ze een extreem geplooide huid krijgen (en dus meer wol produceren). Deze huid neemt in het warme klimaat urine en vocht op. Dat trekt vliegen aan en die leggen eitjes in de plooien van de huid, waarna de maden het schaap aanvreten. Om dit te voorkomen, passen Australische veeboeren een methode toe waarbij ze het schaap op de rug leggen, de poten vastbinden en zonder verdoving grote lappen huid van de achterflank van het schaap snijden. Het is de bedoeling dat de huid daarna glad wordt en littekenweefsel vormt, zodat de eitjes van vliegen niet meer kunnen nestelen. Maar vliegen worden juist vaak aangetrokken door open wonden, waardoor deze methode zowel ondoelmatig als wreed is.
Het hoofd van de afdeling 'Verantwoord Maatschappelijk Ondernemen' van H&M schrijft: "Ons nieuwe standpunt is om met onmiddellijke ingang op zoek te gaan naar (wol)alternatieven die geproduceerd zijn zonder mulesing. We gaan ons richten op andere landen dan Australië en we gaan op zoek naar keurmerken of andere waarborgen die garanderen dat merinoswol uit Australië van boerderijen komt waar men geen mulesing toepast."
Deze aankondiging van H&M is natuurlijk een grote stap vooruit. Nu is het tijd dat de Australische overheid in actie komt.
Stuur alsjeblieft een korte beleefde Engelstalige brief, e-mail of fax naar de Australische Minister van Landbouw, Peter McGauran, en verzoek hem dringend om een einde te maken aan de wrede praktijken die worden toegepast op de schapen en lammetjes die voor merinoswol worden gebruikt.
